I know, I know…it’s awkward! You know, that awkward moment when sweet Auntie Susie says that when she’s “gone” she wants YOU to have her lovely (and, coincidentally, valuable) antique pearl necklace. It’s awkward because you want that necklace–you’ve always wanted that necklace, but so has Cousin Rosie. You know you should ask sweet Auntie Susie to write down her promise in some sort of way, but…
But, nothing. Just ask her to do it. Just have her to write down on a piece of paper that she wants to leave the necklace to you at the time of her death (better yet, encourage Auntie Susie to make a will). The same goes for your next door neighbor, Lonnie, who told you that he wants you to mow his lawn every two weeks for the next six months and he’ll give you $1000 at the end of the six months. It IS super nice of him to make that offer. You know what’s even super nicer? If he signs and dates a letter promising to pay you $1000 in six months.
To sum up: Just get it in writing.
