You’re an entrepreneur! You own your business! You are the master of your fate! Great. I have just one suggestion for you: create an anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policy for your company. So, now it’s your turn to say: “But I only have one employee….and that’s me!” True. But, you have big dreams, so start to act big. Big companies always have a policy endorsing diversity and poo-pooing harassment and discrimination. You want the ideals of acceptance and diversity to be a part of the foundation of your business.
Don’t wait until your company has 20 employees and potential harassment/discrimination issues to create policies. Create them now. Put your policy on your web site. Put it on a poster in your shop. Tell your contractors. Tell your customers. A person will shop where her money is appreciated. But, she will patronize and tell her friends about a place where SHE is appreciated.
