Yeah, I’m straight up serious.
I’ll take Obvious Common Sense for $200, Alex. “When you get pulled over, when you get stopped for questioning, when they show up to your house because it’s 3 am and you’re blasting ‘You Can’t Touch This’.” Answer: Times when you should not act like a douche bag to police officers.
Yeah, I said it. And, I understand…you may have been unjustly jammed up in the past; you may have family members who have been unjustly caught up. But, police officers are people, too. They are hard-working men and women who have decided that their way to reach the American dream is to protect and serve others. Sure, I’ll grant you that there are crooked cops….but, there are also crooked politicians, crooked teachers, crooked firefighters, crooked parents, and crooked librarians.
So, just be respectful and realize that police officers are just as apprehensive about you as you are about them. I’m speaking from experience. Checkpoint Charlie is set up in and around my neighborhood somewhat frequently. When I pull up to the stopping point and the officer asks for my identification, I always say, “My ID is in my purse on the backseat.” Several officers have said, “Thanks for telling me.”
Don’t respect them because they’re police officers, respect them because they are human beings.
