Last evening, I talked with a few of my 1L and 2L colleagues. We discussed law school and breaking one’s way into the legal world.
And, sadly, it was discouraging.
But, I refuse. Becoming an attorney does not have to be a soul-crushing, fun-sucking, gray-suited and half-drunken process. The only reason that many lawyers and law students use such depressing adjectives to describe the road to becoming a lawyer is because we allow it to be so.
In my professional opinion, learning klingon is a perfectly reasonable hobby to list in the interest section of one’s resume. Furthermore, there is no need for a law student to go to each and every single networking event. Finally, not everyone wants to work at a big firm–and not everyone who wants a job at a big firm will get the job.
The machine has to be dismantled. Piece by ridiculous piece.
